SVOD in Half Of The Nordic Homes & Smartcom:tv.

Jan 23, 2020 | By InPlayer

In the Nordics, the online video market is moving towards maturity and penetration is already high in an international comparison. With a strong demand for streaming content, the Nordic markets have among the highest uptake of streaming SVOD services in Europe. OTT adoption in Scandinavia is very high: half of the Scandinavian households have at least one SVOD service and nearly 30.7% of the TV households will subscribe to an SVOD package by 2021.

Currently, there are 5.8 million households in the region who subscribed to at least one OTT service with streaming services gaining constant acceleration. As the streaming wars intensify globally, Scandinavian networks are producing local series to compete with SVOD giants. Even in the most penetrated market, local players such as Viaplay (Nordics), TV2 Play (Denmark), C More (Sweden), Ruutu+ (Finland) are challenging Netflix.

Indeed, Nordic TV companies are changing their content budgets towards local productions, commissioning more local-language series, alone or with co-production. Elinor Clark, Analyst at Ampere Analysis says: “The Nordic countries are home to the most dynamic streaming TV markets in Europe and local players have had to deal with a rapid transition of TV viewers to streaming services. Content is now the key battleground.”

The Scandinavian market is also ahead of the curve regarding technology adoption – which means the video industry must cater for what is one of the world’s first mobile-viewing markets. Scandinavia’s open and innovative culture has led it to be one of the most developed OTT and SVOD markets in the world, and the possibilities for content providers looking to differentiate themselves in this region are truly high.

Premium content is now key and, openness to innovation have made the Nordics home to one of the world’s foremost video industries.
